With the help of a trained Australian volunteer, we have just started a programme to train villagers to make micro-biological filters which reduce the bacteria in water by 95%. We are working with Heifer International to train villagers how to raise livestock in order to generate income and improve nutrition levels in villages. We are working with the Home of the Open Heart, an orphanage for HIV/AIDS orphans linked to a hospice for terminally-ill AIDS mothers. So far, we have assisted by forwarding donations from our medical project to help with the costs of treating AIDS-related infections, funded a hospice housing unit for two mothers, helped create a vegetable garden, arranged for the donation of medical equipment from a UK hospital, and arranged for Montessori training and equipment for the children's kindergarten. We believe there are a number of retired business-people who might like to do as we have done – set up, fund and manage projects in SE Asia. We will be offering to use our experience to set up similar projects to our own under the umbrella of our own foundation, tailored to the interests of the founder, so that he/she can visit Thailand from time to time for recreation and to work on a part-time basis with his/her own foundation. As an example, if a retired computer entrepreneur wanted to spend a few months in Thailand each year helping launch and run a training establishment for disadvantaged youngsters, we could find a group of people who had a need for computer training, find premises, locate staff, and arrange a management structure so that the donor could give his time as an advisor to the project without it becoming dependent on him. |
