Hilltribe Family Sponsorship

A number of kind supporters of Khom Loy have helped the villagers we work with by sponsoring the gift of a pig to a family. The scheme has proved so popular, we thought we’d make it available to visitors to our site.

The Sponsor a Pig scheme

We are looking for sponsors to help with the costs of giving pigs to hilltribe villagers in the villages in Northern Thailand where we work. Sponsors can name their pig and we’ll send you pictures of the pigs from time to time with their proud owners (and, in due course, the pig’s own family!).

Purpose of the Sponsor a Pig scheme

Many villagers in the hills have no land and their only source of income is causal labouring for other farmers and in the city – which is not available year-round. The purpose of the scheme is to help villagers who have no land to farm to develop another source of income by raising and selling piglets. (a short video of KLDF's agriculture project can be seen on the media section of this site)

A pig can have two litters of up to 10 piglets per year, each of which can be sold for up to US$70 depending on how long the farmer keeps it before selling. After buying pig-feed and other costs, a farmer can generate an income of around $500 per year, equivalent to 6 months’ casual labouring income.

The result is that the owner’s family get better fed and clothed, children can stay in school longer, and the family can better withstand unexpected illnesses and accidents (many people lack ID cards and do not get government healthcare).

How the scheme works

A sponsor pays US$200 to sponsor a pig. This covers the costs of:
• a 3 month old piglet with all injections
• materials to build a pig-sty
• pig food supplement until the owner can start selling piglets to buy more feed
• training the villagers how to build the pig-sty with water and drainage systems, as well as how to look after the pig and feed it with a combination of food from the forest and some protein supplement
• medical care
• a replacement pig if the one presented dies or is infertile

The owner of the pig undertakes to repay the gift of a piglet by returning two piglets to Khom Loy (one from each of the first two litters). We use these piglets to expand the scheme among more villages.

(In case you’re wondering, one in every 15 pigs is a boar, which is the property of a villager. He/she “rents” the boar to other owners and receives one piglet per successful litter.)

How you can participate

If you’d like to sponsor a pig, please go to donate and make a donation of US$200 (or UK£100 if you are based in the UK) per pig you wish to sponsor, and then email us giving us your preferred name for your pig.

We’ll send you a photo once your pig is in place and give you a yearly update of progress.
